Build a Bucket 99 OVR Guide
"Build a bucket" sounds like it's all about scoring — but the players who actually run an 82-0 season are balanced, not lopsided. Here's how the draft really works and the order that wins.
The loop in one line
Each round you get a random NBA roster, pick one player, and steal exactly one of their 13 attributes. That slot is now locked forever. After 13 rounds, the Build a Bucket NBA game takes your finished player through a full 82-game season. Three rerolls per run let you skip a board that has nothing you need.
The 13 attributes that decide your OVR
Your overall isn't a flat average — it's weighted by position. A center gets almost nothing from a great 3PT grade, while a point guard lives on HAN, PAS, and 3PT. The full attribute list: shooting (3PT, MID), scoring inside (FIN, DNK), creation (HAN, PAS), defense (PDEF, IDEF, BLK), plus REB, ATH, STR, and CLU. See the full attribute breakdown for what each one does.
A pick order that survives
- Lock your two core skills first. For a guard that's ball-handling and a shot; for a big it's rebounding and interior defense. Grab these while great players are on the board.
- Take the best value, not the best name.An A on a skill you need beats an A+ on one you don't. Empty slots are penalized harder than a low grade, so never leave a core attribute unfilled.
- Patch one clear weakness before you sim. A build with zero defense gets exposed over 82 games. One solid PDEF or IDEF grade is worth more than a third scoring skill.
- Spend rerolls late. Early boards are usually fine. Save your three rerolls for a round where nothing fits the two or three slots you still need.
Can you guarantee a 99 OVR build?
No fixed list can guarantee 99 OVR because each round gives you a random roster and every position weights the 13 attributes differently. A real 99 chase is a decision problem: secure the highest-weight skills for your position, avoid empty slots, and save rerolls for boards that cannot improve the remaining build.
The 99 OVR checklist
- Choose a position before the first pick; the same grades produce different OVRs at different positions.
- Lock the two or three highest-weight position skills when an A-range donor appears.
- Do not spend early rerolls chasing a famous name when the board already fills a useful open slot.
- Protect the final rounds from an empty core attribute; completion is more valuable than one extra luxury grade.
- Judge the finished season as well as the headline OVR. The game rewards a build that can score and survive.
Why balance beats a highlight reel
The season sim rewards a complete player. Stacking five elite scoring grades and ignoring defense gives you a flashy card and a losing record. If you want the higher OVR and the deep playoff seed, build a bucket that can also get a stop. That's the whole game.
